Program |

Come
early, stay late to Birmingham, Alabama Friday will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a guided tour (small fee) of the Vulcan Museum and park. Visit the world's largest cast iron statue and excellent small history museum atop Red Mountain overlooking the city and its environs. Back at the church (after supper on your own) we will have a welcome and opening worship at 7:00 followed by a one woman play at 8:00 based on the life of Virginia Durr starring UUCB member, Ginny Loggins. The play was first produced in February to great acclaim (cost included). Saturday morning we will open with worship followed by two rounds of sessions - applications still being taken. At the least, there will be two panel discussions. The first will be on Ann Bressler's 2001 significant, but little discussed book, The Universalist Movement in America, 1770-1880. The second will examine and discuss the recent work on contemporary universalism of Philip Gulley and James Mulholland, i.e., If Grace Is True and/or If God Is Love. Saturday afternoon we will hear from UUs involved with and knowledgeable of our role in the struggle for civil rights. Afterwards we will tour the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute - a stellar museum - along with Kelley Ingram Park and the 16th Street Baptist Church. Saturday night (after dinner on your own) will be given over to a concert of traditional old time Alabama music featuring top local performers (cost included). Sunday will begin with a business meeting. Worship will include a sermon by the Rev. Kalen Fristad followed by lunch at the church. Why come early and stay late? Thursday night the Birmingham Barons baseball team (AA Southern League) are hosting the Carolina Mudcats and Sunday afternoon the good people at the First Universalist Church of Camp Hill are expecting a visit. The 1907 church building can take your breath away. So, come one, come all, come early, stay late. Alabama will be gorgeous, the city is a vibrant post-industrial city with lots to offer tourists and residents. There are motels and hotels aplenty within a few "blocks" of the four year old church building. Lots of time for talking, visiting, socializing. Costs will be similar to the past, entertainment will be the best yet. Not all details are final, but this is pretty darn close. |
